Services: Compounding

PCAB

Compounding is the science of customized medicine. Most prescriptions are filled with an “off-the-shelf” medicine, prepared by drug manufacturers to work for a wide range of people. Compounded prescriptions are different, because they’re filled with a custom prepared medicine, made specifically for a single patient.

Compounding is performed by compounding pharmacists, a special kind of pharmacist with the knowledge, equipment and training to create medicines from scratch in a laboratory. And because compounded medications are made one at a time, they can be prepared in the form and dose that’s ideal for the patient.

There are many cases where compounding can benefit the patient:

  • The patient requires a customized dose of a medication
  • The patient has difficulty taking a medication in its commercially available form
  • The patient needs a medicine that has been discontinued by the manufacturer
  • The patient is allergic to certain agents used to make a medication
  • The patient takes many medications and would benefit from having them combined

A compounding pharmacist can change the shape, size, flavor, dose and form of a prescription medication by re-creating it in the lab. Bitter medicines can be made to taste sweet. Capsules can be replaced with a liquid. An oral medication can even be transformed into a topical medication, which is simply rubbed into the skin. For every medication challenge, there’s a compounded solution.

And the benefits of compounding are not limited to people. Veterinary compounding is available for animals of all kinds. The pills your pet refuses to take willingly can be turned into a flavored treat they’ll love.

Like traditional prescriptions, compounded prescriptions must be written by an authorized medical professional, like a physician. The compounding pharmacist then works hand in hand with the medical professional to create a customized medicine that’s perfect for the patient.

Prescription Lab Compounding Pharmacy has been filling compounded prescriptions for more than a decade. Our standards for precision, safety and professionalism are so high, we have been accredited by the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board. To date, we are the only pharmacy in Tucson to be recognized by this distinguished board of pharmacy professionals.
